Something about Chinese Movies

Wednesday, January 11th, 2012

Besides Hollywood movies, you should watch movies from other countries or other languages, too! As a movie lover, getting to know different movies with various styles helps me to enjoy more. No doubt that some movies made in China can b performed in English for a wider market, but mostly, movies made in china are in Chinese language.
In China, we have Cantonese and Mandarin. Generally speaking, Cantonese are widely spoken in Hong Kong, Macau; while some people in southern part of China such as Shenzhen also can speak can Cantonese. However, comparing with Mandarin is the commonly used language in China. It is quite hard for its people or people from China mainland to learn the opposite one since Cantonese and Mandarin have totally different pronounce rules. Movies made in it generally are in Cantonese as starred by artists while movies made in China mainland are in Mandarin.
Since movies would be released in China mainland, Hong Kong movies will be dubbed in Mandarin in advance, so that more audience in China mainland can understand what the movie is talking about and have a better box office. Even though Chinese is the second largest movies market in the world, and more and more celebrities and superstars pay attention to this potential market, Hollywood is still the most important role in worldwide motion industry development. Movies from Hong Kong or Movies directed by Hong Kong directors: Do you know what kind of movies are the icons of movies?
In my opinion, I will say action movies, or Kungfu movies. You may hear of Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat, Ziyi Zhang, they are all frame from the action movies. Bruce Lee is considered the first person who took Chinese kungfu movies to the world. A Lee’s film: Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon won the Best Foreign Language Film in 2000 that was a great milestone for Chinese movie, made more and more foreigners are interested in Chinese movies and pay attention to Chinese movies, too.
The stars like Jackie Chan, Chow Yun Fat they perform in Hollywood movies, but also devote into Chinese movies, too! Jackie Chan train and develop fresh action artists and invest into Hong Kong and Chinese motion industry; Chwo Yun Fat had starred in movie Confucius and nominated in the 30th Film Awards. One of the most famous movies from it should be Infernal Affairs, which was reproduced in Hollywood and starred by Leonardo and Matt, named. The Departed. In the writer’s opinion, Hong Kong version is much better. When mention Maggie Cheung, you will not feel strange. She is a great artist, who starred in Comrades: Almost a Love Story, with Leon Lai. Comrades: Almost a Love Story was a successful movie which was well-received in it mainland China and Taiwan, not to mention won several important awards.
